Heather Yonan would like to be a school teacher and write a children's book aimed at helping children deal with the loss of a parent at a young age. Nicole Herman would like to be an emergency room doctor so that someday she can save someone else's father. These hopes and dreams come from children of firefighters in California who've lost their lives in the line-of-duty. Each year, the California Fire Foundation receives several applications for scholarships from children of fallen firefighters who share profound hopes and dreams. These are often based on giving back, inspired by the loss of a parent at an age younger that most.CLICK HERE to hear more about what these scholarships mean to children of fallen firefighters, in their own words. The California Fire Foundation is proud to offer a $2,000 Daniel A. Terry Scholarship to each of these children, but with the rising cost of tuition and faltering economy, this is not nearly enough. Many of these children survive in single income households, where college is a dream rather than a reality. The California Fire Foundation has unveiled its latest venture to help families of firefighters who have died in the line-of-duty: The California Firefighters Endowment. Its mission is to substantially increase the scholarship awards these children receive. In fact, in five years, the Foundation hopes to raise $2 million of endowed funds for this purpose. With an average of ten scholarship applicants a year, this would increase the scholarship reward to $10,000 per child, forever. To reach our goal, we are launching a comprehensive fundraising campaign. Firefighters are being invited to give and to engage members of their own local communities to join and give to our new Friends of California Firefighters program. The California Fire Foundation has implemented this fund to meet the growing needs of firefighter families. For the children of fallen firefighters, these scholarships are often life-changing. They are also an assurance to every California firefighter that if the need arises, his or her children will get the support they need to achieve their dreams of a college education. WEATHER DISCUSSION: SOPS Weather: The ridge of high pressure over California will weaken bringing a slow cooling trend to most of the region through Friday. Maximum temperatures over the warmer valley locations will be in the mid 90s today. Temperatures will warm slowly over most of the region Saturday through early next week as the ridge of high pressure strengthens. Humidity will be very low with widespread single digits and teens above and inland from the marine layer through early next week. The marine layer will remain at around 2,000 feet deep through early next week. A 10 to 20 mph onshore breeze will develop each afternoon through early next week. No shower or thunderstorm activity is anticipated over the region through early next week. END/Shameson NOPS Weather: Isolated to scattered showers or thunderstorms will occur mainly over the eastern half of North Ops today, including the eastern Sacramento Valley. There is also a rather small chance we will also see isolated late afternoon/evening thunderstorms over the western mountains from about Alder Springs to the Trinity Alps. The small low and monsoon moisture causing all the action will be slowly moving eastward today and this evening. Most thunderstorms are expected to have some rain, even locally heavy at times. Tuesday will see drier, more stable SW flow over the region with cooler temperatures. Wednesday through Friday will be noticeably cooler with the warmest inland valleys mostly in the lower to mid 90s. Some areas will also have poor to moderate humidity recovery later this week as well. There were 1848 lightning strikes in a 12 hour period beginning at 8 p.m. on July 22. Currently there are 16 fires between El Dorado and Amador County with 30% containment. All are small - most under an acre and in remote areas. Forest Service Air Attack plane flew again Monday afternoon and continues to identify additional smokes. Approximately 150 Forest Service firefighters are working to contain these fires. Calfire and Pike Fire Department are also assisting. Additional thunderstorms are predicted for Monday evening. Some heavy but scattered precipitation accompanied the lightning. Crews will continue to work on some of these fires throughout the evening.
