NEW: Writing With Your Eyes

Posted: 29 Jul 2012 06:39 AM PDT

A new technology described in the paper published online on July 26 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, might allow people who have almost completely lost the ability to move their arms or legs to communicate freely, by using their eyes to write in cursive. The eye-writing technology tricks the neuromuscular machinery into doing something that is usually impossible: to voluntarily produce smooth eye movements in arbitrary directions.

"Contrary to the current belief, we show that one can gain complete, voluntary control over smooth pursuit eye movements," says Jean Lorenceau of Université Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris. "The discovery also provides a tool to use smooth pursuit eye movements as a pencil to draw, write, or generate a signature."

The advance could be of great benefit for people deprived of limb movements, such as those with Lou Gehrig's disease (also known as ALS), the researchers say. It might also help to improve eye movement control in people with certain conditions such as dyslexia or ADHD and/or for experts, such as athletes or surgeons, whose activities strongly rely on eye movements.

The Five Year-Old Feral Girl Who Moos

Posted: 29 Jul 2012 05:48 AM PDT

The Parent Dish site reported:

A five-year-old girl has been found living with cows in rural Russia. The 'feral' girl is said to be unable to speak and can only communicate by mooing.

The 'feral' girl was rescued by Russian police after a neighbour in the Solikamsk district in the Ural Mountains raised the alarm.

The unnamed child does not know how to eat properly, preferring to drink milk from a saucepan, police officials have said.

The authorities were called in by a worried neighbour living close to the small farm run by the girl's parents, who are believed to be alcoholics.

Officials said the neighbour told them 'a little girl is living with cows.

'During the check we found that was indeed true.'

When she was found she was allegedly wearing next to nothing and was living in a cowshed with the livestock on the farm.

The Boss Who Honored His Driver

Posted: 28 Jul 2012 08:45 PM PDT

Recently, one of my blog subscribers, Mr. Krishnan, sent me a touching story which I would like to share with you today, Thank you Mr. Krishnan for sharing it.

The BOSS honors his DRIVER of 30 years by driving his dead driver to his grave!
-Author Unknown-

This story is about Mr. Zavere Poonawala who is a well-known industrialist in Pune, India.

His driver named Ganga Datt has been with him for the last 30 years chauffeuring his limousine, which was originally owned by Acharya Rajneesh.

Ganga Datt passed away recently and at that time Mr. Poonawala was in Mumbai for some important work.

As soon as he heard the news, he canceled all his meetings, requested the driver's family to await him for the cremation and came back to Pune immediately by a helicopter.

On reaching Pune, he asked the limo to be decorated with flowers as he wished Ganga Datt should be taken in the same car which he himself had driven since the beginning.

When Ganga Datt's family agreed to his wishes, he himself drove Ganga Datt from his home up to the ghat on his last journey.

When asked about it, Mr. Poonawala replied that Ganga Datt had served him day and night, and he could at least do this being eternally grateful to him.

He further added that Ganga Datt rose up from poverty and educated both his children very well.

Ganga Datt's daughter is a Chartered accountant and that shows the kind of upbringing he must have given to his children.

His comment in the end, is the essence of a successful life in all aspects:

"Everybody earns money, nothing unusual in that, but we should always be grateful to those people who contribute to our success.

This is the belief, we have been brought up with, which made me do, what I did".

This is truly an inspiring example of humility.

Compassion

Compassion

Angels must be confused by war.
Both sides praying for protection,
yet someone always gets hurt.
Someone dies.
Someone cries so deep
they lose their watery state.

Angels must be confused by war.
Who can they help?
Who can they clarify?
Whose mercy do they cast to the merciless?
No modest scream can be heard.
No stainless pain can be felt.
All is clear to angels
except in war.

When I awoke to this truth,
it was from a dream I had last night.
I saw two angels conversing in a field
of children's spirits rising like silver smoke.
The angels were fighting among themselves
about which side was right,
and which was wrong.
Who started the conflict?

Suddenly, the angels stilled themselves
like a stalled pendulum,
and they shed their compassion
to the rising smoke
of souls who bore the watermark of war.
They turned to me with those eyes
from God's library,
and all the pieces fallen
were raised in unison,
intertwined like the breath
of flames in a holy furnace.

Nothing in war comes to destruction,
but the illusion of separateness.
I heard this spoken so clearly I could only
write it down like a forged signature.
I remember the compassion,
mountainous, proportioned for the universe.
I think a tiny fleck still sticks to me,
like gossamer threads
from a spider's web.

And now, when I think of war,
I flick these threads to all the universe,
hoping they stick on others as they did me.
Knitting angels and animals
to the filamental grace of compassion.
The reticulum of our skyward home.
